Peter Hristoff

Peter Hristoff was born 1958 in Istanbul into a Bulgarian-Turkish family of artists and a lot of his work has been strongly influenced by Turkish art. In addition to adapting ideas and images from his native country to painting and printmaking, he has made contemporary art using traditional Turkish rug weaving techniques (which i’m going to explain you in the chapter of Gullubahce Rug Workshop). His grandfather was a landscape painter, as is his father, and his sister is an artist as well. He emigrated to New York with his family in 1963, but although they left their friends and homeland behind them, the Hristoffs carried with them to the New World their culture, their traditions and their memories. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1981, and completed his master’s degree at Hunter College, City University of New York in 1983. In the mid-1980s, he started dividing his time between Turkey and the US. Hristoff describes his work as exploring themes of joy, sorrow, hope, despair, belief and desire. He is the recipient of the Joan Mitchell Award in Painting, the New York Foundation for the Arts Award in Drawing, and the Moon and Stars Project Grant. Currently, Hristoff is a professor of painting and drawing at the School of Visual Arts in New York.
